VA State Police Say Senator Deeds Stabbed During Fight With Son

(Charlottesville, VA)  --  Virginia state Senator Creigh Deeds is now listed in fair condition after being stabbed during an altercation with his son at the lawmaker's home early today.  Deeds' 24-year-old son Gus was found dead of a gunshot wound at the residence.  Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller said investigators are looking at the case as being an attempted murder and a suicide.  Geller called it an ongoing investigation and said she would not comment on a possible motive.  Senator Deeds is hospitalized with stab wounds to the head and upper torso.

A source tells the "Richmond Times Dispatch" Deeds' son had a mental health evaluation yesterday.  The report cites a source saying Gus Deeds had been released Monday following the evaluation performed under an emergency custody order.
